In a clinical study involving humans, 40 adult men experiencing diffuse hair shedding (telogen effluvium) were given oral vitamin D3 at a high dose of 200,000 IU every two weeks over a three-month period.
After completing the treatment, doctors evaluated the results and found that 82.5% of the men showed noticeable improvement. This included visible hair regrowth and a clear reduction in ongoing hair shedding across the entire scalp, rather than in isolated patches. In simple terms, around 8 out of 10 men responded positively to the treatment.
Instead of counting individual hairs, researchers relied on clinical observation and visible changes, which is a common and accepted method in studies of telogen effluvium.
The results also indicated that improvements tended to be stronger in younger men and in those with better vitamin D levels, such as individuals who had more regular exposure to sunlight.
These findings suggest that addressing vitamin D deficiency may help restore the normal hair growth cycle, allowing hair follicles that were stuck in the shedding phase to return to active growth—rather than the improvement being due to time alone.
